About this presentation

Federal funding for HCBS ensures that integrated community services are not only best practice, but will determine how services are funded. As service providers, we are often challenged by individuals who have been labeled as "difficult to serve" due to their behaviors. This presentation will focus on the transformation of several services within a group of agencies that transitioned from site based programming to person-centered community services, and why it has made a tremendous difference in not only the quality of services people receive, but has reduced staff turnover and changed the way we think about providing services.

About the Presenters

Scott Shepard, a silver-haired man with a similarly silver goatee in a salmon open collared shirt standing against a white cinderblock wall.Scott Shepard teaches courses on Behavior Assessment & Positive Behavior Support at CSU Northridge; serves on the Santa Clarita Valley Mayors Committee for Employment of Individuals with Disabilities; and provides direct support services as a Director at Avenues Supported Living Services, a small non-profit agency that provides supported living and individualized day supports in the North LA County area.

As one agency transformed it's services over 25 years ago from site based behavior services to community based, Heather has worked and flourished. She has worked at both Marshall's department store and Regal Cinema for over 15 years, and lives in her own apartment.




Learning Objectives

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:

  • Have an understanding of an individualized approach to community and environmental matching for work and career opportunities
  • Have a better idea as to how staffing patterns impact behavior and staff burnout
  • Understand how to empower people we support to have more control over hiring and firing the people who support them.
  • See evidence of the benefits of individualized, person-centered supports related to behavior

Adult service providers, transition service providers, community living providers, families and self-advocates

How to participate

This series of live webinars will be streamed over the web. Each presentation will be about fifty minutes, followed by ten minutes for questions and answers. Registered participants will receive an e-mail with instructions and the link to join the webinar on Tuesday (two days prior) and a reminder the morning of the event.
