About this presentation
People with severe reputations have often been relegated to segregated programs with little hope of inclusion in general ed classes, typical community activities, or meaningful careers. Person centered approaches can help us and the individuals we support to move beyond their reputations to find meaningful relationships, activities and careers. We will focus on finding the communication behind the behavior, replacing or reducing medication with meaningful activities, and sharing stories of empowerment and self-determination.
By the end of the session, participants will be able to:
- Have tools to help identify the communication behind the behavior.
- Have a basic understanding of how self-determination and person centered approaches can help identify a contextual fit through environmental matching and skill building.
- Have a better knowledge of how to look at medication, medical factors and other barriers that may be contributing to behaviors currently being displayed.
Community Living staff, supported employment providers, educators, transition staff, family members, and self-advocates.
