Individuals with disabilities have faced a long history of programs such as group homes, nursing homes, larger institutions and medical facilities that limit housing choice. Today more than ever, we are challenged to create housing opportunities that are truly individualized where the person with a disability is truly the owner and in control of their home.
This webinar will provide and array of proven strategies and methods utilized throughout the United Sates for creating person-controlled, community based home ownership opportunities for individuals with disabilities. We will describe through individual stories, how local community resources, available to all citizens, are being used to create a places that can be called home.
By the end of the session, participants will be able to:
Understand how home ownership is attainable for people with limited incomes.
Identify community resources available to all people to assist with home ownership.
Supported Living agencies, families, and people who want to own their own home and control their services.
About the presenters
Jennifer Lengyel is the Executive Director of Total Living Concept in Kent, Washington, a person centered agency supporting over 70 individuals in different capacities to live, work and become valued community members. She has been working and advocating for individuals with disabilities to live in their own homes for the last 24 years.
Joe Wykowski is the Executive Director of Community Vision in Portland Oregon. Joe founded the Homeownership Independence Program and the Future Assets for Independence Program. Recently, he assisted in creating the Oregon Accessibility Loan Fund (which provides low interest loans to individuals for technology and equipment relayed purchases) and Dream Builders, a mentoring and educational learning journey for families and youth ages 13- 21. Joe served on the Multnomah County Housing Commission and the Mayor’s Vision PDX planning committee. He is the Past President of the Oregon Homeownership Collaborative, and a past executive board member of TASH.
How to participate
This series of live webinars will be streamed over the web. Each presentation will be about fifty minutes, followed by ten minutes for questions and answers. Registered participants will receive an e-mail with instructions and the link to join the webinar on Monday (two days prior) and a reminder the morning of the event.
