Envisioning a Full Future for Your Child with a Disability

About the series: Envisioning a Full Future for Your Child with a Disability is a three-part webinar series for family members of young people with disabilities, co-presented by TASH and the State Wide Advocacy Network's National Resources for Access, Independence, Self-Advocacy and Employment (RAISE) Technical Assistance Center. Often-times parents of children with disabilities are discouraged by messages about their child’s potential, even from professionals, educators and others who are supposed to help. This series will support you in your high expectations for your child’s future as a happy and thriving member of a community. It is never too early to start working with your child to build big dreams. This series will showcase the voices of young people and parents who have been through this before and will provide practical instruction from experts in the field of transition to help you and your child build a vision of meaningful relationships, education, and career.

It's Never Too Early For Vision: Planning For Life After School

Darcy Elks is a parent of three young adults, one of whom has a disability.

Mary Elks is very enthusiastic about her life as an employee, friend, performer, and teacher.

Episode one will focus on developing a well defined and articulated vision to focus, guide, and inspire action in the face of attitudinal obstacles and other set-backs.

Fruition: Families Demonstrating the Adult Lives that are Possible

Becky Garland is the parent of a son with down syndrome, and a board member of the North Carolina TASH chapter.

David Maennle Works for Graham County EMS in Robbinsville, NC, and lives in his own apartment.

Jean Trainor is the proud parent of a son with a disability and was a member of the TASH board of directors from 2010-2015.

Nate Trainor graduated from Waverly High School, audited classes at Wartburg College and lives with two roommates.

Lynne Sommerstein is the parent of a daughter with a disability.

Michelle Sommerstein frequently speaks at conferences about living with disabilities.

In Episode two, you will hear real life examples from three young people and their parents. They will talk about what their lives look like now, why vision was important in getting there, the "magic moments" along the way, and practical knowledge they have gained from their experiences.

What You and Your Child Need to Consider in Building a Great Life

Beth Dixon is the parent of a son with a list of labels.

Episode three will provide tools for taking advantage of the opportunities that your community offers with the service system and applying these to the elements of a great life : home, work, friends/relationships, membership, and fun.




How to participate: This series of live webinars will be streamed over the web. Each presentation will be about fifty minutes, followed by ten minutes for questions and answers. Registered participants will receive an e-mail with instructions and the link to join the webinar on Tuesday (two days prior) and a reminder the morning of the event.

Attendees can register for individual sessions or for the entire series. Participants registering for the complete series will receive one episode free. Prices are as follows:

Individual sessions are $5. The complete series price is $10.

All the presentations will be recorded and available after the event in the TASH Training Resource Library.
